Probation

Probation Period

There is no legal maximum probation period in Australia but the duration must be reasonable.

The standard practice is 3-6 months depending on seniority, industry and role.

Performance Review

Performance and behaviour expectation must be communicated by you or their manager at the start of employment. Job descriptions must also be accurate and up to date as these are the usually what the employee will be assessed on during their probation period.

It is advised to review the employee’s performance regularly (monthly at a minimum) during their probation period to:

  • understand where to support the employee best
  • how well they are performing against performance expectations
  • give yourself an idea if this employee is likely to pass probation

Extension of Probation

Any extensions of probation requires agreement with the employee.

The maximum length of a probation period should be 6 months (including extensions).

Global Teams will reach out to you before the end of probation to ask you whether or not you wish to confirm the employee. If the employee continues to work past their probation end date without an extension or termination, they may be deemed as a permanent employee.

Termination During Probation Period

If you are considering terminating an employee before or at the end of the probation period, please contact Global Teams and the HR team will advise you of next steps in accordance with the law. It is important that you do not communicate a termination to an employee until Global Teams has informed you that you can proceed with communication.

Before considering terminating an employee in their probation period, please ensure that you have provided enough time to review the employee's performance fairly.
